Neurodiverse Teens CONNECT at Supper Club

A Cooking Club for Middle & High School Teens 13+

WHAT?   Supper Club is a unique culinary opportunity for participants.  Each monthly supper is a two-hour, all-inclusive, hands-on cooking class experience where participants prepare an easy meal together in our cozy home kitchen.  Participants sit together, share the meal and conversation following preparation.  Following the meal, participants clean up.  Conversations are guided by conversation starters around the theme.

WHERE?  Camp Cook Kitchen

WHEN? 4:30pm - 6:30pm on the 3rd Saturday of each month.  Four participants minimum and six participants maximum per class. $65/participant.

HOW?  Students learn culinary and organizational life skills essential for navigating the kitchen and for future independent living.  Each month has a specific theme, focus, with intentional concepts and skills.  The curriculum is mindfully and purposefully designed for learning in the home environment. Our teaching method is based in positive terms, praise and encouragement.  We express what participants need to do rather than focusing on what not to do.

WHO?  We have created our cooking classes for 7th-12th grade teens, 13-22 with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, social anxiety, and similar needs.  Other neurodiverse individuals with social and neurodevelopmental differences are also welcome. Please see our prerequisites below.  Currently, our classes are primarily for individuals on the higher functioning end of the spectrum.  We do have some adaptive tools/utensils in our kitchen for those who may need them.  All participants learn about weights, measures, ingredients and their uses, how to interpret and follow a recipe, use a full range of utensils and tools, basic cooking skills, basic knife skills, basic table setting, kitchen safety 101, small appliances, ovens, electric and gas cook tops, and much more.

PRE-REQUISITES?  Our core prerequisites for all participants are the following:

:1.  Literacy - specifically be able to read and follow simple written directions.

2.  Ability to follow simple verbal instructions.

3.  Ability to mirror simple, visually demonstrated directions.

4.  Willingness to work independently in a small group setting with others.

5.  Non-aggressive comportment, with ability to self-regulate.

6.  Comfortable with hand-on-hand support/guidance.

7.  Interest in participating in learning to cook.

8.  We require an initial questionnaire for all incoming participants prior to registration. Why do we ask for this? Our classes are purposefully small so participants receive individualized attention. Every class is taught according to the needs and accommodations of the participants in each class.

9.  We also prefer all new participants, along with parents/guardians tour our kitchen whether it be at an open house, or a private (free) appointment before their first class.  This simply eases the common anxiety students have about a new environment.

INTERESTED?  If you're ready to register, here's how to start the registration process:   Please go here to request our Teens CONNECT questionnaire.  You will receive a live link to the questionnaire.  Complete and submit questionnaire.  After submitting, you will receive an immediate thank you message.  Then, go to Neurodiverse Registration Page  where you can view full menus and register for as many classes as you like.  Questions?  Feel free to text/call the office 281.855.9779.
