Neurodiverse Teens 13+ CONNECT at Summer Camp 2024
A Slice of Summer Registration is Open!

WHAT/WHO?   Each of our unique summer cooking classes offer participants individualized attention in a cozy home environment from a professional and caring Culinary and Life Skills coach.  Our neurodiverse summer camps are for teens/young adults ages 13-22 with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, social anxiety, and similar needs.  Other neurodiverse individuals with social and neurodevelopmental differences are also welcome. Please see our prerequisites below.  We are completely hands-on.  All participants learn about weights, measures, ingredients and their uses, how to interpret and follow a recipe, use a full range of utensils and tools, basic cooking skills, basic knife skills, basic table setting, kitchen safety 101, small appliances, ovens, electric and gas cook tops, and much more.

HOW?  Participants learn culinary and organizational life skills essential for navigating the kitchen and for future independent living.  Each summer camp session has a specific theme with intentional concepts and skills.  The curriculum is mindfully and purposefully designed for learning in the home kitchen. Our teaching method is based in positive terms, praise and encouragement.  We express what participants need to do rather than focusing on what not to do.  Because curriculum is hands-on our class size is limited to four- six students/session.

CAMP PREREQUISITES?  Our core prerequisites for all participants are the following:

:1.  Literacy - specifically be able to read and follow simple written directions.

2.  Ability to follow simple verbal instructions.

3.  Ability to mirror simple, visually demonstrated directions.

4.  Willingness to work independently in a small group setting with others.

5.  Non-aggressive comportment, with ability to self-regulate.

6.  Comfortable with hand-on-hand support/guidance.

7.  Interest in participating in learning to cook.

8.  We require an initial questionnaire for all incoming participants prior to registration. Why do we ask for this? Our classes are purposefully small so participants receive individualized attention. Every class is taught according to the needs and accommodations of the participants in each class.

9.  We also prefer all new participants, along with parents/guardians tour our kitchen whether it be at an open house, or a private (free) appointment before their first class.  This simply eases the common anxiety students have about a new environment.

1.  No previous kitchen or cooking experience needed.  All skill levels welcome.

2.  We often work in small groups and share recipes that make a large portion size, such as baking.

3.  Participants eat, share, and bring home any leftovers of prepared recipes.  Participants will sit and eat together.

4.  Participants must be age 13-22 and completed 7th-12th grade in order to register.

5.  Cell phones are not allowed in the preparation or kitchen area during class time.  There's a designated cell phone spot. Participants are able to take pictures after recipes are plated.

6. Closed toe shoes required of all participants. No sandals, or flip flops.  Participants have aprons to use during class.

7.  We provide water and lemonade.

8.  We use seasonally fresh, organic ingredients, shopped local as much as possible.  We also limit our use of highly processed ingredients. We strive to be sustainable; any to-go packaging we use is recyclable and biodegradable.

9.  We are able to modify most of our recipes to gluten free/dairy free.  We must know this at the time of registration in order to accommodate.
10.  Summer Camp is drop and go.
